Polyclonal Antibody to Cystatin C

Cystatin C or cystatin 3 (formerly gamma trace, post-gamma-globulin or neuroendocrine basicpolypeptide), a protein encoded by the CST3 gene, is mainly used as abiomarker of kidney function. Recently, it has been studied for its role inpredicting new-onset or deteriorating cardiovascular disease. It also seems toplay a role in brain disorders involving amyloid (a specific type of proteindeposition), such as Alzheimer's disease. In humans, all cells with a nucleus(cell core containing the DNA) produce cystatin C as a chain of 120 aminoacids. It is found in virtually all tissues and body fluids. It is a potentinhibitor of lysosomal proteinases (enzymes from a special subunit of the cellthat break down proteins) and probably one of the most important extracellularinhibitors of cysteine proteases (it prevents the breakdown of proteins outsidethe cell by a specific type of protein degrading enzymes). Cystatin C belongsto the type 2 cystatin gene family.

Cys C is removed from the bloodstream by glomerular filtration in the kidneys，and be reabsorbedby proximal tubule, then metabolic breakdown , therefore its concentration inthe blood is determined by glomerular filtration without relying on anyexternal factors, such as age, sex, race and eating habits, that can be used asa ideal homology marker of the glomerular filtration rate.

Normally, the concentration of Cys C in serumand plasma is between 0.51-1.09 mg/L (reference range). When kidney function isimpaired, the concentration of Cys C changes in the blood with the glomerularfiltration rate Cys C concentration in the blood increased by 10 timesfollowing glomerular filtration rate drops when renal failure. If glomerularfiltration rate is normal but renal tubular dysfunction will hinder theabsorption decomposition of Cys C in the renal tubules, leading to theconcentration of the urine increased by 100 times.
